All That Glitters…

…is not necessarily gold…

The Lovebirds, billed as this year’s headline Spiegeltent show in the Garden Of Unearthly Delights, is somewhat of a letdown for cabaret enthusiasts, when compared to previous headliners: La Clique, The Company of Strangers and Cantina. But, if you’ve never seen a cabaret act in the Spiegeltent before, you’ll thoroughly enjoy these preening parrots in this spectacle.

The Lovebirds, led by the sultry silvery starlet, Simone Page Jones, make the most of the vast space afforded to them in the Idolize Spiegeltent: they sing and dance on stage, cluck and strut around the audience and will even attempt to seduce (read: mate) with unsuspecting punters. The highlights: the resounding rendition of Lady Depardieu and the sweet vocals of Jones throughout.

Rubina Carlson Nestled Amongst The LoveBirds

The feathery quartet are technically brilliant, and their supporting jazz quartet equally so. Kudos to Matthew Carey, who once again has proven his prowess as a musical director. The original songs are truly engaging: you’ll want to bop along or prevent that tear from escaping. Their costumes are awesomely outrageous: feathers, glitter, sequins, pinks, blues and golds. Their make-up almost a character of its own. Their dance routines seemed a little reminiscent of those seen in High School Musical and Glee: prop-driven and a little corny. Nevertheless, The LoveBirds carry right on – their enthusiasm for cabaret is infectious. The lighting cues were (as you’d expect from a Garden show) spot on, but occasionally the audio levels seem a little low. I missed a few of the more delicately delivered lines.

For the cabaret enthusiasts out there, the letdown really lies with the feeble plot. It is not much more than an excuse for these songbirds to chirp and croon about love, love-making and… well, you get the idea. I wanted the plot to advance during the 60 minute show, but instead was treated to a cyclical journey, simply reminiscing on days gone by.

Flashy and flamboyant, these LoveBirds won’t be flying away anytime soon… they are performing most nights at the Garden of Unearthly Delights until 18 March 2012. Tickets available here.

The Axis of Awesome: Songs in the Key of Awesome

Damn straight these songs are in the key of awesome!

Noriko and I managed to score seats on opening night for The Axis Of Awesome – we were packed into the Deluxe in the Garden of Unearthly Delights like sardines in a tin!

The fellas did not disappoint, performing some new songs (including a throwback to their ‘boy band’ days, a nod to George Michael and some smooth lovin’ RnB raps)  as well as an updated version of the perennial favourite: 4 chords! Benny’s musical prowess on keys alone compensates for their over-practised spoken comedic routine, while Jordan’s rock stances will knock you out. Guitarist Lee is clearly happy in his corner of his stage.

Also kudos to their technician – rocking lighting sequences, spot on audio levels and enough smoke to fill the Deluxe twice over!

The Axis of Awesome: Songs In The Key Of Awesome is on every night at 9:30pm until Sunday 13 March 2011 in the Garden Of Unearthly Delights. Book your tickets here. The fellas are also putting on a late night show, The Axis Of Awesome & Friends Sing Songs!

Viva La Franglaise Avec Nikki Aitken et Matthew Carey

It’s hard to miss the vivacious Nikki Aitken, especially when she plays the loud, crass English girl, Carol Pratchett in this brand new one-woman musical, Viva La Franglaise.

Carol recounts her tale through song and theatre, revealing that she suffers from an “accidental” identity crisis. Trying to escape her troubles, she heads to “nice Nice” in southern France, then masquerades as Madame Constantine Le Previeure. What follows is morality tale of mistaken identity; hopes and dreams; struggles and loss; honesty and loyalty. Matthew Carey accompanies Aitken on this lovely ride as musical director, pianist and French love interest, Henri.

The pair present this tale affectionately; their chemistry somewhat genuine. Aitken (or Carol or Constantine, it’s not always clear who is on stage), in a stand-out red frock, demands your attention. Her voice fills the cavernous Spiegeltent, almost whipping your hair back if you’re in the front row. Carey’s occasional harmonic vocals are truly refreshing.

It’s an enjoyable hour, worth seeing especially if you speak a little Franglaise.

Viva La Franglaise returns to The Promethean soon… dates to be announced on Cabaret Confessional.

Cabaret Live!

Last Sunday, I headed to Parisian cocktail bar, La Boheme, to check out Cabaret Live – an open mic night for cabaret artists in Adelaide. MC for the night was the lovely Sidonie Henbest, ahead of her upcoming Fringe show New York Nights & Intimate Mornings, accompanied by Adelaide’s best musical director, Matthew Carey (both pictured below).

I only just managed to pick up a cocktail at the bar and score a seat next to Noriko: La Boheme was packed! There was such a buzz in the air: a genuinely supportive, loving, (sometimes forgiving) environment.

This open mic night was a great opportunity for some of Adelaide’s own cabaret artists to showcase numbers from their upcoming Adelaide Fringe shows. And for a $7 entry fee, you really couldn’t ask for a better deal as a punter.

Sidonie opened the show with a lively “Hostess With The Mostess”, then invited talented cabaret comrades (some as young as 14!) to take the stage for 5 or so minutes each. Some hadn’t performed to an audience before, some completed the course at Cabaret Summer School while others had clearly been around (at least) once on this merry-go-round before.

My highlights: Nikki Aitken’s crass English woman Carol Pratchett from the brand new cabaret show, Viva La Franglaise; the smooth, foxy Charles Sanders who is bringing A Modest Exhibit to the pop-up venue Arcade Lane; and a wicked rendition of the Alto’s Lament.

Looking forward to seeing Viva La Franglaise at The Spiegeltent tonight!
